This Saint Olaf's cross has been bestowed upon Frederic, Marie, Edouard MOISEZ, on december 26th1855.
He was born in Hamburg in 1804 (his father was an emigre officer) and died in 1865.
In 1855, he was sous-intendant militaire de 1re classe (colonel), and in 1857, intendant Militaire ( général).
This corp was an administrative corp of the army.
Maybe the reason why he receive his cross without the swords?
For our Moisez cross, unfortunately, he diplomas were sold years ago separately…
But I 'have found some documents on the french LEONOR web site. http://www.culture.gouv.fr/LH/LH168/PG/FRDAFAN83_OL1896003V001.htm
I enclose the most interesting pieces.
The canalized ring are often seen on 18th and 19th century order of Saint Louis knigth cross, and generally officers cross of the Legion of honor before 1848.
It is an easy way used by jewelers to make rings of orders, less gold, easier to bend.

pictuer of the reverse in the book is the correct 1890 model of the Knight 2.

Silver and white enamel Maltese Cross with ball-tipped finials, with the crowned ‘O’s (for Olav) in silver between the arms, with blue enamelled crossed swords above denoting a military
award, on jewelled swivel crown suspension; the face with a circular central red enamel medallion bearing the gilt Norwegian lion within white, blue and white concentric enamel rings; the
reverse with a circular central red enamel medallion inscribed in gilt letters ‘RET OG SANDHED’ (Justice and Truth) within white, blue and white concentric enamel rings; minute chips to
the white enamel of some of the tips of the arms, the red enamel of the reverse centre chipped from wear; on original ribbon; in a later fitted case by J. Tostrup of Oslo. The Order was
instituted on 21 August 1847 by King Oscar I of Sweden and Norway as a specifically Norwegian order, named for King Olav II (Saint Olav), patron saint of Norway (995-1030, reigned
1015-1028) and to be awarded ‘for distinguished services rendered to the country and mankind’. The Order has been awarded only about 5,000 times since its inception and insignia are
expected to be returned on the promotion or death of the recipient. For these reasons, the Order is rare in all ranks. This very early example dates from the late 19th or first few years of the
20th Century.
Very short swords with blue enamel back.
Cravatte hinge upside down.
Was completly black at purchase. Cleaned up now and it is a gilted version with a gold lion. Sold as silver. T

Please note the Hallmark: JT 925!! I.e. this is a gilted Knight from between 1890 and 1906 made by J. Tostrup in Oslo. It is quite unique as normally (always) the Knights are of gold. The
Knight 2 in silver where only made in a limited number of awards in that period. Therefore it is assumed that the gilted Knights are extremely limited. No known reason is given why they do
exist. Maybe there was a surplus of silver ones and a lack of gold ones?? Maybe Tostrup wanted to save money?? The small Os are very thin like normal for Tostrup of that time. The
normal 1882 gold Knight has only one date. But this is then dated to 1890 and is the only Knight dated from 1890.
