Italy, Al Valore di Marina, in bronze, engraved Geo. Lewis, Wreck of S.S. "Utopia", March 17th
1891 35 mm, with B. H. Stief Co. of Nashville silver riband bar, good very fine The S.S. Utopia of
the Anchor line left Naples on 12 March 1891 for New York with 815 Italian emigrants on board.
At about 7 pm on 17 March the ship was in the Bay of Gibraltar close to the Mediterranean Fleet
which was at anchor. By a grave error of judgement, the Captain brought his vessel across the
bows of the battleship Anson, making no allowance for the warships underwater ram. The ram
tore a large hole in her side close to the stern. Bulkheads and engines were torn away and the
vessel began to settle by the stern. The terrified emigrants rushed to the bows and began to jump
or were thrown into the sea. The fleet sent their boats with the utmost speed but the night was
pitch black and panic had taken over aboard the liner. Many acts of heroism were performed that
night, including many by men of the Royal Navy. The liner quickly sank with the loss of 502
emigrants, one saloon passenger and 12 crewmen.
