Arctic Expedition of Philippe, Duc d'Orleans, 1905
Reference:
770
France, Arctic Expedition of Philippe, Duc d'Orleans, 1905, silver medal with clasp, unnamed, 31
mm, a few marks, good very fine and rare The reverse of the medal features the Maroussia, the
private yacht of Louis-Philippe-Robert, Duc d'Orleans. The Maroussia was used during his 29
June - 15 July 1904 sporting expedition from Troms› to the west coast of Spitzbergen. The vessel
used on the 1905 expedition to Northern Greenland (which the Duc sponsored) was, however,
the well-known Belgian Antarctic ship Belgica It would therefore appear that the unknown
recipient of the present award received the Maroussia medal with the 1905 clasp, rather than a
separate medal and clasp for the Belgica's voyage. The officers and crew of the Belgica totalled
25 men, and the Duc d'Orleans was to take her on two further Arctic expeditions, in 1907 and
